Supporting the continuous development and use of a patient partnership framework in European rare disease networks (ERNs): a scoping review of frameworks in the scientific literature

The European Reference Networks (ERNs) for rare and complex diseases have significant potential for fostering patient partnership, guided by the recently developed ERN Patient Partnership Framework. This scoping review aims to identify and describe relevant frameworks published between 2013 and 2023 that focus on patient partnership and align with core ERN activities. Twelve frameworks are identified from MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science, showcasing practical approaches, conceptual insights, or both. Some frameworks address specific ERN activities, while others have a broader scope, varying in engagement approaches, terminology, development methods, content, and structure. The review emphasizes the need for clear definitions of patient partnership and highlights the importance of framework implementation for structured evaluation.
