A new disease profile is added to our database – Vitiligo. It is a pigmentation disorder of the skin, the mucous membranes (tissues that line the inside of the mouth and nose and genital and rectal areas) and the retina. The cause of vitiligo is not known. People develop antibodies that destroy the melanocytes (cells that produce pigment) in their own bodies. There are reports of a single event such as sunburn or emotional distress triggered vitiligo. However, these events have not been scientifically proven to cause vitiligo. Most of people who have vitiligo develop it before their 40th birthday. The disorder affects all races and both sexes equally. To obtain more information about the disease, visit the site of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases in USA or click here and send us a request.
