FIRST NATIONAL SYMPOSIUM
EXPERT CENTERS FOR RARE DISEASES IN THE HEALTHCARE SYSTEM OF BULGARIA
April 4, 2025, Novotel Sofia
The First National Symposium on Expert Centers for Rare Diseases will bring together leading specialists on April 4 in Sofia.
The Institute for Rare Diseases, under the patronage of the Ministry of Health, is organizing the First National Symposium on the topic ” Expert Centers for Rare Diseases in the Healthcare System of Bulgaria.” The event will take place on April 4, 2025 (Friday), at 9:30 AM, at Novotel Sofia.
The main goal of the forum is to gather, for the first time, the leaders and teams of expert centers for rare diseases in Bulgaria, along with representatives of the Ministry of Health, the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), the National Health Information System (NHIS), patient organizations, and other stakeholders. The aim is to discuss specific measures to improve the activities and support of expert centers, as well as their better integration into the national healthcare system.
Currently, Bulgaria has 34 expert centers for rare diseases, located in 13 university hospitals in Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, and Pleven. Seven of these centers are full members of the European Reference Networks (ERNs), and one is an associate member. The centers provide diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care in various medical fields, including neurology, immunology, pediatrics, hematology, gastroenterology, and others.
The symposium will present the results of over ten years of work by the Rare Diseases Commission at the Ministry of Health, which has been a key driver in improving medical and social care for patients with rare diseases.
The event will bring together internationally recognized experts, including Prof. Birutė Tumienė, Chair of the Board of European Reference Networks and member of the Baltic Society for Inherited Metabolic Diseases, as well as Caterina Lucano, Scientific Team Manager at Orphanet at the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM).
The forum will feature interactive panel discussions, where representatives of expert centers, academia, health authorities, patient organizations, and industry will discuss and seek practical solutions for improving regulatory frameworks, financing, and the integration of innovations in the field of rare diseases.
